Bone Mineral Densitometry
A BMD scan utilizes low-energy X-rays to measure the density of your bone to diagnose osteoporosis and assess fracture risk. These bone density measurements are compared to the norms of past quantitative studies of various age groups and from there; results are then generated to predict the likelihood of possible fracture in a time frame.
There is no special preparation required.
No fasting is required and you can eat and drink normally and continue to take your usual medications.
Prior to scanning:
Your height, weight and some medical history will be obtained.
You will be asked to lie on a scanning bed.
Usually, the lower spine and both hips are scanned which may vary depending on your clinical circumstances.
The procedure should take approximately 20 minutes although actual scanning time is just around 5 minutes.
